Who suffers from insomnia? Ever find yourself suddenly awake and wondering why you are now alert? Laying incredibly still, you listen to see if there’s an intruder skulking in the house and then deem whatever you heard was the dog. Or maybe one of the kids made a strange noise and you realize they are fine? Or maybe it’s hormone induced – suffering from perimenopause, being awake is one of the perks. Whatever the reason why, you realize everyone else in the house, including the dog, is slumbering peacefully. Except YOU. You know this, because you eventually, physically got up and walked the entire house to double check locks and peer in on everyone before you can rest easy. You think: How nice for them. (when really, you just want to jab them awake, and then say, go back to sleep honey, everything is good)
I don’t know what it is, but it seems the universe does not want me to sleep and every night there is always something. Last night, I was finally sleeping well, we got this new mattress and it’s taking some getting used to it, apparently you have to “break in” the Tempur-pedic mattress. They are very stiff when you first get them. So it was about the 7th day, and I’m actually getting some much needed ZZZzzs.
Inexplicably, my husband’s alarm clock, that he never uses anymore (he sets a nice gentle ring alert on his phone now) the radio goes off at midnight. I’m brought out of sleep wondering why I’m hearing Michael Jackson Woo-hoo-hooing. It’s not loud, but the volume is enough that I’m now standing in my room trying to figure out where it was coming from. Was it my son’s room? And what I find interesting, is my husband is sleeping right through it. He wakes, at the 2nd time I ask, “WHERE IS THAT COMING FROM?”
And my husband groggily asks, “Where is ‘what’ coming from” to which I replied, “you don’t hear that?” And he says, “oh, when I put our nightstands back after assembling the bed, and I plugged the clock back in, my alarm must have been pressed and set at midnight.” It’s right next to his HEAD and he wasn’t awakened by it? Seriously? So he chuckled and then turned it off, rolled back over and was sound asleep instantly. (what the heck?)
MEANWHILE (blink, blink, blink)
I’m now laying eyes wide open, any ounce of sleep long gone – wondering why God keeps having me awakened during the night. There must be a reason. Am I supposed to be on alert? Is Jesus coming? Am I to be awake and watching at 2AM? Don’t laugh, I’ve actually looked out my window before to the sky. The neighbor working swingshift hours, returning home in the middle of the night, must think I’m very odd. Why is that woman always up & looking out her window? I should make it fun – open the window and call out, “Don’t worry – I’m not watching you, I’m just looking for Jesus.” hahahahah – I’m sure he’d run inside his house and post something on his social media about his neighbor, the Crazy lady.
35 Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming – in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning – 36 lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!”Mark 14:35-37 (NKJV)
35 So, stay at your post, watching. You have no idea when the homeowner is returning, whether evening, midnight, cockcrow, or morning. 36 You don’t want him showing up unannounced, with you asleep on the job. 37 I say it to you, and I’m saying it to all: Stay at your post. Keep watch.”Mark 14:35-37 (MSG version)
